Their huge investments are pushing prices up to unprecedented levels -- with serious consequences for ordinary people's quality of life and the global economy. More…

Why Oil Price Is High - Fed Printed Way Too Many Dollars

www.chroniclesmagazine.org — The two biggest factors in oil’s high price are the weakness in the U.S. dollar’s exchange value and the liquidity that the Federal Reserve is pumping out. In an effort to forestall a serious recession and further crises in derivative instruments, the Federal Reserve is pouring out liquidity that is financing speculation in oil futures contracts. More…

'Free Software' Scammers Fined $2.2 Million

techdirt.com — We've seen various incarnations of the scam (often found in infomercials) where a company offers you something for "free," but in the fine print, you're really signing up for an ongoing paid service. For years, some of the biggest "ringtone" companies made much of their money this way, offering "free" or cheap ringtones that actually involved the user signing up for a monthly service without realizing it. The infamous "Video Professor" has been accused of running a similar system, though the company vehemently denies this. More…

Viacom Demands YouTube Take Down Viral Video Made By Viacom

techdirt.com — We know that Viacom really dislikes YouTube, but it seems to have taken that hatred a bit beyond reasonable (assuming you don't already consider its $1 billion lawsuit unreasonable). For the MTV Movie Awards (MTV being a Viacom property), Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. made a "spoof" viral video to try to get attention for their upcoming comedy movie, Tropic Thunder. The clip was well done, and clearly recognized all the key ingredients to make a viral video a winner. So what happens with a viral video? Well, it gets sent around and, most likely, gets placed on YouTube. So, what does Viacom do? Well, thanks to reader Cannen for pointing out the news that Viacom sent a takedown notice to YouTube. MIT's YouTomb project is tracking the takedown. It makes you wonder if Viacom is so blinded by its hatred of YouTube that it missed the point of a viral video being that it be allowed to be... you know... viral. More…

Republicans Block Extra Taxes On Oil Companies

www.huffingtonpost.com — Senate Republicans blocked a proposal Tuesday to tax the windfall profits of the largest oil companies, despite pleas by Democratic leaders to use the measure to address America's anger over $4 a gallon gasoline. The Democrats failed, 51-43, to get the 60 votes needed to overcome a GOP filibuster and bring the energy package up for consideration. More…
